LJ Phillips Jr., a former standout running back for South Dakota, has officially joined the Iowa Hawkeyes through the NCAA transfer portal. This acquisition is poised to significantly strengthen Iowa's offensive capabilities, as Phillips comes off a remarkable 2025 season where he dominated the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) with his electrifying performances. His decision marks a pivotal moment for both Phillips and the Hawkeyes, who are looking to enhance their ground game with a proven talent.
During his tenure at South Dakota, Phillips established himself as one of the most dynamic rushers in the FCS. In the 2025 season alone, he amassed an impressive 1,921 rushing yards and scored 19 touchdowns. His exceptional season included nine games where he rushed for at least 100 yards, highlighted by an extraordinary 301-yard effort against Northern Colorado in September. Prior to his breakout year, Phillips had more limited opportunities, totaling 272 yards and four touchdowns on 46 touches across his first two collegiate seasons. His career statistics now stand at 2,193 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns on 340 carries over 35 games.
Phillips, who redshirted in 2023 and played sparingly in 2024 before his dominant 2025 campaign, will enter the 2026 season as a redshirt junior. His decision to commit to Iowa came after weighing offers, including one from Penn State. Notably, Phillips previously faced Iowa State's Cyclones, led by Matt Campbell, in the past season, though his performance in that game was modest with 13 yards on four carries. Now, he's set to bring his considerable talents to Iowa City, aiming to elevate the Hawkeyes' rushing game. His high school career at Northwest High School also showcased his potential, where he earned two-time all-state honors, rushing for 4,113 yards and 59 touchdowns, following in the footsteps of fellow alumnus Breece Hall.
The commitment of Phillips also comes amidst discussions surrounding the future of long-serving Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz. Entering his 28th season, Ferentz has maintained a consistent and successful program. Under his leadership, the Hawkeyes have participated in bowl games in all but five of his 27 seasons, boasting 13 consecutive bowl appearances and 23 in the last 25 years. The 2025 season marked the 11th time a Ferentz-led team achieved at least nine wins in a regular season. Ferentz has expressed his continued enthusiasm for coaching, citing his enjoyment of working with his staff and maintaining a balanced life.
Phillips' arrival is expected to inject a new level of excitement and performance into the Iowa Hawkeyes' offense. His proven ability to gain significant yardage and find the end zone will be a valuable asset as the team prepares for the upcoming season, aiming for continued success under Coach Ferentz's veteran guidance.
